There is a secret out there that leads to instantly having a better self-image (keep reading it’s not what you think)
Before I let you in on this secret, consider that Self-worth for many people is tied to physical appearance, namely overall body size.
Is it any surprise?
You and I are bombarded with images of celebrities in skimpy and seductive outfits. And even some positive publications like my favorite fitness magazine (Oxygen) while promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle (full of strength training!), are not actually portraying a realistic image that every women is going to have the time or interest to look like.
Side note here: I am not against using images like this for motivation, but you have to keep it in
perspective.
So here’s that little secret:
Rather than focus on what your body looks like, focus on what it can DO.
This small shift in thinking will produce magnificent results. Quick story:
At age 12, Cheryl Haworth weighed 240 pounds. By age 17 Cheryl weighed just over 300 pounds. These numbers are enough to sink the spirit of any growing girl and demolish her with never-ending self-hatred.
However, Cheryl didn’t worry about what she looked like. Instead she focused on what her enormous body could do. She played softball, and one day when she was 12 she ended up in a gym where the sights and sounds of weight lifting mesmerized her. She was hooked. At age 17 she took the bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in weight lifting.
Now you don’t have to go become an Olympic level athlete but you get the point. Set performance-related goals, such as:
-Run one mile outside nonstop
-Complete 10 full on-your-toes chest-to-deck push-ups
-Do your first full pull-up (that’s a good one!)
-Bench press 100 pounds (women); 175 pounds (men). This is a good strength training goal
-Time your 60yd sprint and work to shave 2-3 seconds off (that’s a lot on a sprint)
-Complete a toes-to-bar hanging ab leg raise (that’s bringing your leg all the way up to touch the bar
over your head
-Maybe you do want to learn how to do some Olympic lifts….go for it.
There are endless “what your body can do” goals that you can devise.
When you begin concentrating on effort and performance, the vanity aspect fades into the background.
Take the women in our Beast Mode Squad program womens weight lifting program; in that program our focus is on getting strong.
And looking lean and lovely is the by-product.
These women are definitely discovering things that they never thought their bodies could do and are loving it!
If I was a betting woman I’d bet that the people who focus their New Years goals on getting stronger and eating a more clean, real foods based diet (like we do in Beast Mode Squad) will be the ones that end up looking exactly how they want this year.
Look, don’t get caught up with “body types.”
Instead, get caught up with body strength, body endurance and body fitness.
Eat healthful foods not because you want to look like a Victoria’s Secret model, but because you want to slash your risk of breast cancer and be around to see your grand kids grow up.
Our next session of Beast Mode Squad in Sacramento Ca starts 1/13/14 but you can register now to save your spot.
